Mod 1: Our "Icebreaker" Post

In this discussion we were to post a number of memories about the year we graduated high school as a way of getting to know each other and learning how to post!

Ruth V. Barton's Memory Lane

During the heart of Rock'n Roll we thought the coolness of the 1960s was completely over but of course in hindsight the 70s were really cool, too. In 1978 the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out, as did Saturday Night Fever. Disco was still going strong, which was great for me because I loved dancing to the funky kind until 4:00 in the morning with my friends when certain dance bars would let us in even though we weren't all 18 yet. It was also the year of the Camp David Peace Accords when Egypt and Israel established a lasting peace with President Jimmy Carter helping them to do it. I was in Tucson with some of my best friends because I graduated early from high school in Eastern Long Island and we all met up there. It was a very open time culturally, and yet, I can see that that openness is still around; it has just morphed and gone underground into many professional fields now, such as education - and into our children and grandchildren!
